Here are 4 main points you should always be on the lookout for, to better understand vaginal discharge:
- Colour of discharge: The normal colour of vaginal discharge is usually transparent or whitish. You may see brown discharge during pregnancy or after menstruation
- Texture of discharge: Normal vaginal discharge varies from being pasty and sticky to transparent and stretchy, depending on which phase of the menstrual cycle you’re in
- Odour of discharge: Normal vaginal discharge usually has a mild scent or no scent at all
- Quantity of discharge: Normal vaginal discharge varies in quantity from very little to quite a lot for different women and different stages of the menstrual cycle. (e.g. increases during ovulation)
Types of vaginal discharge:
Sometimes you might notice changes in the colour or texture of your vaginal discharge. Some changes are completely normal while others may call for attention.
Below are the types of discharge:
- White Discharge - Once your period begins, you may notice a thick white discharge at the beginning and end of your menstrual cycle, which is completely normal. However, in case this discharge is accompanied by itching, then it may be a sign of a yeast infection
- Clear and Stretchy Discharge - When you’re ovulating, your discharge will feel stretchy like mucus. This is normal and indicates that it’s the perfect time for you to conceive a baby!
- Clear and Watery Discharge - Some women may experience clear vaginal discharge, which can be light or heavy, depending on their physical activity
- Brown Discharge - Dark brown discharge right after your period calls for no concern and is quite common; it’s simply your vagina cleaning itself out
- Dark Yellow or Green Discharge - If the vaginal discharge is accompanied by a foul odour, it may indicate an infection and should be checked with a doctor
- Light Yellow Discharge - If your period hasn’t begun yet and you see some yellow or white discharge, that is perfectly normal!
If you suddenly notice a change in the appearance, smell, colour or texture of your vaginal discharge, then it might be a sign of an infection. If the discharge is accompanied by pelvic pain or bleeding, you should consult your doctor immediately.
Feeling worried about getting checked? You shouldn’t! These issues can be easily treated, so it never hurts to go get it checked!
